Unilateral pallidothalamic tractotomy using MRI-guided frequency ultrasound has been used on three genetically confirmed XDP patients (R. D. G. Jamora et al., 2021). There was a 36.2% reduction of BFMDRS from baseline at 6 months and 30.1% reduction at 1 year. Further studies on more patients are needed.
MRI Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS)
What is MRgFUS
MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a procedure that uses highly focused sound waves to destroy abnormally functioning tissue deep in the brain. It uses no radiation and does not require physical surgery. It is used to treat essential tremor (ET) and symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD), including tremor, rigidity, and slowness of movement. It has been used experimentally inx-linked dystonia parkinsonism (XDP).
Currently, it is not available at the Makati Medical Center.
